MMA gloves?

Hey, some of you younger fellas who train, do the fingerless, four ounce mma gloves give your knuckles much protection. By that I mean, can you really whale on a fella's skull and not break a knuckle. I always loved putting on eight ouncers because they allowed me to really put some power into my punches and still not fuck up my hands. Scraps that I got into on the job or on my own always left me with busted up hands. My right hand looks like a catchers mit nowadays. I have never worn a pair and just wonder. Seems like they have a lot o hand injuries in MMA and it made me wonder.
